20-Year-Old Distracted Driver Live Streams Video While Driving 116 MPH

Imagine this: you’re notified on Facebook that a friend is live streaming video. Upon opening to see what’s going on, you find that he is not only driving, listening to loud music and looking at the camera while taking video and showing his friends… he turns the camera around to reveal he’s traveling at 116 MPH. He’s also swerving between lanes and around cars at this speed. All while still recording. A recipe for disaster.

The worst part? This really happened.

Unsurprisingly, a few minutes in to this reckless behavior – the video suddenly cuts out. The distracted driver was twenty-year-old Onasi Olio-Rojas, who crashed into a garbage truck on Route 6 in Rhode Island. His car was completely crushed, and Olio-Rojas was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, but survived the crash. The garage truck driver did not sustain serious injury.

Our Phoenix personal injury lawyers blog about distracted driving often and its impact is seen more and more each year. As if we didn’t have enough things to worry about, we can now add live streaming video to the list of things people should never do while driving.

For those of you who haven’t seen the commercials Facebook has been putting on television and online, Facebook Live and Instagram Live is a new service where users can start a video to show what they are doing in real time. Friends or followers can then react to the video in real time and comment while the person streaming can view and respond in real time. Think of it as live TV with the ability to communicate in that instance. It’s an incredible invention, but not one meant for those driving.

With today being one of the biggest drinking holidays of the entire year, we at Knapp & Roberts want to remind everyone to be safe. Don’t be distracted by your phone or radio and never take your eyes off the road. If you’re out celebrating tonight and drinking alcohol, do not get behind the wheel. Designate a driver that won’t drink. Order an Uber, Lyft or taxi. Take the light rail or bus. Whatever you do – don’t risk putting yourself and others in harm’s way.

Have a Happy — and Safe — New Year!
