UV Technology Aims to Fight Hospital-Acquired Infections

Published on February 16, 2017

Imagine if a robot could enter an operating room or patient room and disinfect even the hard to reach places by zapping away dangerous germs, bacteria and viruses in just 10 to 20 minutes. New UV technology is making this possible for hospitals everywhere. It’s called the Helios UV-C Ultra Violet Light Disinfection System, made by Surfacide. The technology works to fight drug-resistant organisms like MRSA, VRE, C.diff, colitis, and other hospital-acquired infections, also known as HAIs.

Hospitals across the U.S. have put Helios to the test and some have studied the results. Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare in Utica, New York studied the system’s effects for a year and found a 39-percent reduction in C. diff infection rates. Augusta Helath in Fishersville, Virginia and Phoebe Putney Health System in Albany, Georgia also use the technology in hopes of reducing HAIs.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), on any given day, about one in 25 hospital patients has at least one healthcare-associated infection. This costs U.S. hospitals $28.4 to $45 billion annually. Surfacide reports on their website that HAIs kill more than Prostate and Breast Cancer combined.

With millions of people entering the hospital each year, the need for disinfecting technology like Helios is increasingly important. Millions of Americans are trusting hospitals, doctors and nurses to safely care for their well being. When a hospital fails to enforce proper procedure to help protect you from hospital-acquired infections, serious injury or wrongful death may occur.
